CUTV is the official television station of Cardiff Students' Union.

Cardiff Union TV work closely with our sister Cardiff Student Media organisations, Gair Rhydd, Xpress Radio & Quench Magazine to broadcast the latest developments within Cardiff University and the Welsh capital to the student body.

Since our inauguration in 2007, we have built an impressive inventory of both filming and editing equipment. Our new office is based within the Gair Rhydd realm on the 4th floor of the Student's Union.

We're the youngest student media society in Cardiff, so bookmark cardiffunion.tv in your browser and spread the word!

Christmas time!

Hello CUTVers!

It’s been a busy semester with lots of different projects running over the past three months.

We have broadcast live, not only for the first time, but twice within two weeks! Both of which were record-breakers or first-of-kind!

We have completed a basic training programme which ran to train members on the equipment we have and to give an overview of how things work over at CUTV.

We have filmed (amongst many others):

- Frank Turner interview (1000 hits in 5 days)
- CoppaFeel Charity Ad
- RAG week flashmob
- Varsity Series
- Oxjam
- Swn
- Roller Derby documentary
- Team Cardiff
- Freshers Welcome Video

We have many exciting projects still under development or being filmed/edited at the moment.

Next term we are planning at least two live broadcasts including one from the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff over Varsity 2012.  We will also have masterclasses running and even put in a trip to the NaSTA awards in April.

We are very excited about what the next term will bring, we hope you are too.

If you’d like to get involved and you haven’t yet – get in touch.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a splendid New Year!

Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!

Freshers TV 2011

We were live once again last night as Freshers TV 2011 hit the nation’s computer screens.  Over 20 student TV stations from around the UK took part in the epic three hour broadcast hosted by SUSUtv.  Cardiff Union TV was the last segment of the evening, linking up with SUSUtv to play our own version of ‘Would I Lie To You?’.  Of course, banter about the recent Stags V Dragons broadcast was rife but we soon put SUSUtv in their place and showed that Wales always do come out on top.  1-0 to the Dragons!

A team from Cardiff consisting of several first year CUTVers put together a professional looking and sounding broadcast having learnt a few key lessons from two weeks ago!

With Sam Bailey and Sophie Gregory making their very professional presenting debuts, the whole team pulled together to put a Welsh stamp on the night.  We’re very proud to have now completed two live broadcasts in as many weeks and look forward to many more in the near future.  In fact, a very special Christmas broadcast may well be in the pipeline!

Thanks must go to Dom Kullander (Station Manager, SUSUtv) and the SUSUtv team who pulled off a phenomenal, slick broadcast of a scale that student TV has never seen before.  The whole broadcast was supported by NaSTA (National Student Television Association) who we also extend our thanks to for their support and advice.

Also announced last night was the date of the 2012 NaSTA Awards, which will be held this year at Nottingham University on the 20-22nd April 2012.

Viewing figures were a record as was the number of stations taking part.  We’ll publish the official figures as soon as we receive them.

In the meantime, here is a photo from the evening:

Autumn Semester Training

Hello and Happy Monday!

I can happily tell you that today is the day that we are starting our training programme. While the rest of the sessions are being shuffled about and confirmed, today’s session is already ready to go. So this Monday (10th October 2011) we will be introducing CUTV as a platform for student TV, how we work, showcasing a few bits and pieces (not just from us!) and discussing how short films and documentaries can really work well for us.

You can dip in and out of the training programme as you see fit, for those of you who came to the one in spring – this will be similar with a few massive changes that you will soon be made aware of. Next spring we will be having advanced training in the shape of masterclasses with industry professionals.

The first two sessions are in different locations from the last six (which are all in the SU).

Session 1: Small CHEMY lecture theatre (main building) – 7pm-8pm.

Hope to see you all there! Don’t forget to get on Facebook and ‘like’ the Cardiff Union TV page.

SUSUtv and CUTV present Stags v. Dragons: The Live Link – up

Wednesday 5th October 2011, 20:30pm – 21:00pm

Southampton University and Cardiff University TV stations are teaming up to produce a live, interactive online broadcast – pitting the Southampton Stags against the Cardiff Dragons. Not only should this be an entertaining and amusing show, but is also a testing ground for the exciting technology that will be used in the ‘FreshersTV’ live show on October 19th. ‘FreshersTV’, which is also being hosted by SUSUtv and run by the National Student Television Association (NaSTA), will link up over 20 university stations nationwide and is promising to be the student TV event of the year.

‘Stags v. Dragons’ aims to:

Challenge English freshers against Welsh freshers, with an eventual “winning team” at the end of the show Test the technical possibilities with regards to what we can achieve in ‘FreshersTV’ Give Cardiff TV Station a chance to produce a live show, with the possibilities of further link ups between NaSTA affiliated stations

The Southampton end of the show is based in the union’s main concourse area (next door to The Stag’s Pub), whilst Cardiff’s production will be set in their union pub The Taf.

Each station will have two presenters running their end of the show, as well as a judge overseeing the challenges. Freshers will be recruited from the pubs and offered the chance to compete for their country, as well as having a chance to be on TV. The challenges involve building a team mascot out of piles of rubbish, feeding their teammates cream cakes and wrapping other competitors in toilet roll. The broadcast will allow for testing of split screen video and live interaction between the stations, as well as using social media such as twitter and Facebook to involve viewers back home.

It can be watched online at: www.susu.tv
